Trapdoor Springfield sporting rifle, .45-70 caliber, serial #18823. 30” commercially made octagon barrel measuring 7/8” across flats, blue and case hardened finish, large buckhorn type western rear sight with blade front sight. The rifle shows a checkered plain walnut stock with hard wood inlay at forend, trap in butt with cleaning rods. The rifle shows 95-98% original blue finish, 90-95% case hardening on action, lock, and mounts. The stock shows a light original color with sharp checkering, some minor dings, mars, scratches, and use, but at least very good plus to near fine overall. The action is good, the bore near excellent. These sporting rifles were made by manufacturers and distributers from military surplus parts sold in the 1870’s and 80’s. Meacham Arms Co of St. Louis and Hartley & Graham of New York were known to manufacture such arms along with a host of smaller frontier makers. Beautiful condition. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
