Lot of two 1935 Townsend Club National Convention pieces. In 1933, Dr. Francis E. Townsend began a movement for a national financial support for the elderly. He argued the seniors would spend the money, helping the economy out of the Depression. His Townsend Clubs appeared all over the country and they held their first national convention in Chicago in 1935 where they assembled a petition with 20 million signatures of support. In response, Congress passed the Social Security Act which initially provided senior citizens with $150 a month. - Weber Collection
