Military and political leader of the Haitian Revolution, born a slave, who delivered both emancipation and independence to his people (1743–1803). Scarce partly-printed DS in French, one page, 7.5 x 11.75, April 6, 1801. As "General en chef de l'armee de Saint-Domingue," Toussaint Louverture appoints Francois Canivet to be a lieutenant in the Sixth Company of the Third Battalion, to "fulfill the duties, enjoy the honors and pay appropriate to this rank." Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait (bearing a printed signature) to an overall size of 19.75 x 19.75. In fine condition.
