Description: Medium: lithograph (after the original). In 1896 Toulouse-Lautrec executed his famous Elles portfolio; this is a faithful limited edition replica. It was published in London in 1969 by the Toulouse-Lautrec Circle, and embossed with their dry stamp seal. Issued in an edition of 1250 and printed on watermarked wove paper. The sheet measures 12.25 x 9.5 inches. The lithograph been printed on paper from the same mill in Docelles, France, that was used by Lautrec's publisher Gustave Pellet for the originals. Signed in the plate (not by hand). This piece was issued by subscription only in 1969 and is now quite scarce. French-born aristocratic artist Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, better known simply as Toulouse-Lautrec, lived primarily in Paris during his short life that lasted from 1864 to 1901. He started sketching and painting at the early age of eight years, and although his artistic career ended up spanning only 20 years, during that time he created more than 730 paintings, 275 watercolors, over 360 prints and posters, more than 5,000 drawings, plus works in ceramic and stained glass. Elles, a series of ten lithographs devoted to the theme of prostitutes, was based on Lautrec's observations of daily life inside a Parisian brothel where he resided briefly in 1894. The prints are highly original in their representation of mundane aspects of the prostitutes' existence, particularly moments of intimacy and friendship. In this image, a prostitute is looking at herself in the mirror. This image suggests the influence of Art Nouveau.
