Toscana ca. 1490 Virgin and Child, in high relief. Madonna seated on imaginary throne. Her high forehead emphasised by her hair, combed back in accordance with the fashion of the period. Her head framed by a veil. Dress held by a belt and with star-trimming along the collar. Cloak overlaps the frame of the relief, a naturalistic detail that reduces the distance between the viewer and the Virgin and Child. Infant Jesus, seated next to his mother on a cushion, is held by her with both hands. Her restrained smile reflects the joys of motherhood dampened by a foreboding of Christ's suffering - represented by the nails and crown of thorns in the Child's hands. Flanked by two angels, with praying hands raised in admonitory gesture. Stucco w/ old coloration. The relief is set into an original early 16th Cent. Renaissance frame. Frame architecture w/ original gilding bearing the inscription: "AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA"., (Wo). EURO 18.000 - 22.000 US $ 15.500 - 19.000
