Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad (T&T RR) was chartered 5 July 1904 and directed by Francis Marion Smith, the “Borax King” [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads, 1915, p. 1645]. The railroad itself was in operation from 1906-1940. T&T Railroad traveled through Death Valley and served the borax and mining businesses. X-Bill Wright collection. Tall-Globe lantern, 10” tall, without bail, machine embossed “The Adams and Westlake Company” and “Chicago/ New York” around the ventilator top. Unlike any other lanterns in this collection, this example’s lid is simply embossed “Patented May 28.1895” and hand-embossed “T&T.R.R”. The standard, clear glass 5 3/8” tall-globe, etched “T&T R.R” is faintly purple, indicating that manganese was present during the manufacturing of the glass, which dates the globe to pre-1910. The upper and lower rims of the globe are consistently chipped and dinged, and there are several small bubbles throughout the glass. The lift-out burner is embossed “Beacon” on the wick guard and “E. Miller & Co./ Made in U.S.A.”. Wire cage. - Jacobitz Collection -59718
