Tonopah,NV - Nye County - c1910 - Torino Saloon and Restaurant Photograph :
Nevada token collectors will find the Torino Saloon and Restaurant revealed in this wonderful shot of the saloon. Photograph measures 8 1/2”x6 1/2”, grey single matte 12”x10” with minor wear on the corners, high contrast, and focus is sharp. On the upper middle portion of the matte is a crease that has transferred to the 7/8” white border of the photo. The crease terminates on the roof of the Torino Saloon, approximately 1/4” into the image. Crease very faint. Photographer is identified as Herbert T. Shaw of the Florentine Art Studio in Tonopah. This photograph is very sharp. One can clearly read Torino Saloon and Restaurant, Rainier Beer, and perhaps the owner/manager C. Carella on the Board and Lodging sign that overhangs the nine men and two women posing for the photo. The town sprang to life soon after Jim Butler discovered silver at what is today Tonopah Springs. In 1905 it became the county seat and by 1907 the booming mining town had the marks of a developed city. The three most common Nevada saloon tokens collected are the Turf Saloon from Millers, Nevada Saloon from Manhattan, and Torino Saloon from Tonopah. Interestingly, the Torino Saloon tokens misspell Tonopah as Tonapah.
