Tonopah,NV - Nye County - c1910 - Native American Card Game Photograph :
Seven Shoshones, four women and three men enjoy a card game under a staircase in Tonopah. Horses are corralled in the background. Across the street is a building that simply reads RESTAURANT. It is believed that the local Shoshone Tribe, living in the area around what is today Tonopah, pointed James Butler to the rich ores that helped revive Nevada mining at the turn of the 20th Century. Photograph measures 8 1/8”x6”, no matte, medium contrast, and focus is variable. The faces of the Shoshones are blurred except for the profile of the man on the right and the man with his back to the photo. On the reverse the name H. Floyd is written in ink. Photographer not determined.
