The photograph shows a small shed at left with some lumber stacked nearby situated on a sagebrush-covered hillside, with not much else around. Two men stand on a hill of pilings. Granite Mt. is in the distance. E.W. Smith is the photographer from Tonopah. Photo measures 6.5 x 8.5” with top left corner missing at margin. Some soiling around edges but otherwise very fine. Originally known as Cedar Spring at its founding in 1867, the tiny community served as a stage stop on the Wells Fargo line from Westgate to Belmont. It was later renamed Baxter Spring after a local resident. In 1905 gold was discovered and the community sprang to life. George Wingfield purchased the Baxter Spring mine for $25,000 in February1906 and the town soon topped out at 400 residents. Businesses—mostly in tents—included 4 saloons, 2 grocery stores, mercantiles, hardware and boarding houses. Other mines in the vicinity were developed. But, by the end of 1906 the shallow ore veins had given out and the town was abandoned [Ref: Preserving the Glory Days, Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Nye County, Nevada, Shawn Hall, Univ. of Nev. Press, 1981, 1999, p. 128].
