In this photograph the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (UBC) pose in front of a Hotel in Tonopah. Photograph measures 8 ¼”x6 ½”, black single matte—minor wear on the edges 12”x10”, high contrast, and the focus is sharp. The faces of the men are easily recognizable and the United Brotherhood banner reads sharp. The UBC was born from the labor leader Peter J McGuire in Chicago, 1881. As a union the UBC has fought for labor rights from the time of its inception. By 1910 membership had grown to 200,000 nationwide. Tonopah was the seat of many labor disputes and it is no surprise to see UBC members in the town. Tonopah, like other successful mining camps, went from a population of zero to thousands within a year, sometimes months. Carpenters were in high demand, not just miners. Silver, discovered by Jim Butler in 1900, brought hoards of people to Tonopah and by Fall of 1902 the population soared to 3000. By 1907, Tonopah boasted the infrastructure and entertainment of any modern town.
