Tonopah,NV - Nye County - 1905 - Street Scene on Brougher Avenue Photograph :
Candid shot of Brougher Avenue. Photograph measures 8 1/4"x6 1/4”, no matte, high contrast—though it tends toward the grays, and focus is sharp. There is a small crease on the upper left corner and some minor wrinkling on the upper right. Writing in ink on the reverse describes the obvious presented in the photo. Photograph was once affixed to construction paper, remnants of which remain where the glue was attached. Photographer identified as E. W. Smith of Tonopah. Brougher Avenue was named after Wilse Brougher, a Tonopah pioneer prospector. When Jim Butler discovered gold in 1900, nothing in this image, but the mountain existed. The reality depicted here is particularly insightful. Manure lines the streets, garbage is strewn about in front of the boardwalk on the left, and a dog is feeding on the trash. A city in transition and all the realities that come with such cities.
