<B>Tonopah, NV</B></I> - $10 1929 Ty. 1 <B>The Nevada First NB</B></I> Ch. # 8530<BR> Tonopah was founded around 1900, shortly after gold was discovered in the area. By 1907, the population was big enough to support a note issuing National Bank and emissions of large size notes commenced immediately with 1902 Red Seals. Mining in the region peaked in the teens with $10 Million in gold, silver, and copper being mined in Tonopah in 1913. Mining quickly dwindled and so did the population, leaving the need for only a modest emission of small size notes from 1929 to 1932 when the bank was liquidated. The quick population decline is well illustrated by Nye County's other issuing town, Rhyolite, which was a ghost town by 1916. The recent discovery of this note brings the total of small size notes known to six, a number that is very misleading. The only notes from this bank to make auction appearances were a large size and small size that appeared in Heritage's 1995 ANA Auction. This piece is comparable in grade to the small size offered in that auction, with solid paper and a pleasing overall look. <B>Fine</B></I>, with some moisture spots that will be of no consequence to determined Nevada collectors. In January of this year we auctioned a far-more-common small size Lovelock that realized $21850 against an estimate of $15000 to $20000.
