1906 - This lot contains extensive documentation (5 legal size manila file folders, full) from such assay offices as the American Smelting & Refining Company, Desert Power and Mill Company, R. H. Officer & Co., Jim Butler Mining Co., and the in-house assayers of Tonopah Mining Company of Nevada. Assayed samples from May 1906 represent the Tonopah Mining Company of Nevada, lots 1605, 1609, 1611, 1613, 1615, 1675, 1632, 1634, and 1635. Many of the assay reports are present in duplicate form, many with corresponding slips from Western Ore Purchasing Co. attached. The Tonopah community began circa 1900 with the discovery of gold and silver-rich ore by prospector Jim Butler when he went looking for a lost burro he owned. The burro had wandered off during the night and sought shelter near a rock outcropping. When Butler discovered the animal the next morning, he picked up a rock to throw at the beast, but instead noticed the rock was unusually heavy. He had stumbled upon the second-richest silver strike in Nevada history. The American Smelting & Refining Co. (ASARCO, still active today,) was founded in 1899 by Henry H. Rogers. The Tonopah Mining Co. Of NV was incorporated in 1901. This collection of assay records represents a unique opportunity to understand a significant time in western gold rush history. Other items of interest include North British & Mercantile Insurance Company of London & Edinburgh documents pertaining to the Desert Power & Mill Company; Globe & Rutgers Fire Insurance Company documents pertaining to Tonopah Mining Co. Of Nev.; A deed agreement between TM Co of NV and Gayhart, Butler, Oddie, Higgs, and Brougher. - Maish Collection -61560
