Incorporated in 1879. Cert. #2179, issued to Geo. H. Wilh in 1882 for 100 shares. Signed by Wm. H. Whipple as president and Wilson Loyd, treasurer. Vignette of Girard at top and an underground mining scene vignette to the right. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer: Lehman & Bolton, Philadelphia. Datelined Camden, N.J. "Location Pima County, Arizona Territory" written beneath mining vignette. Wilson Loyd is treasurer at this time for several Tombstone companies based in Camden, New Jersey, including the Cincinnati and Intervener--and Wm. H. Whipple was the Cincinnati's president as well. Although Tombstone is in Cochise County, and the stock certificate says its location is Pima County, it may be simply a matter of having designed the certificates before Cochise County was established. Cochise County was created in February 1881, creating the new county out of the easternmost portion of Pima County, and naming it for the famed Chiricahua Apache war chief. The Girard was the first mine in the Tombstone area to build its own mill in camp, using its own water that had to be pumped out of the mine. The end result, however, was that the company had to mill ores from the Contention and Tranquility to help pay for its own mill, as they were unable to develop enough paying ore themselves. About 1884 they did find some profitable ore, but for only about one year. In 1886 they sold out to the Tombstone M&MC, who moved their facilities from Charleston.
