Tombstone, A.T. Sodding / Prostitute Stool c1880s
Featured in this lot is this Tombstone, Arizona Territory Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. This is a sodding or prostitute stool that shows a cast iron frame and a fabric and leather lined seat with the leather lining showing the most wear. In historical contexts, particularly in some European cities, the term "sodding stool" was occasionally used euphemistically to refer to a small, low stool associated with street prostitutes. These stools allowed women to sit in public while waiting for clients, often in areas where standing for long periods was impractical or drew unwanted attention from authorities. The term has since faded, but it reflects the resourcefulness and visibility of sex workers in urban life. The condition of this sodding or prostitute stool is preserved with some wear to the fabric of the seat itself and patina adorning the cast iron frame of the stool consistent with age but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of this prostitute stool is 6 1/4" x 10 1/2" x 8 5/8". The collective weight of this sodding stool is 2lb 14oz. MS171
