Tom Lovell - Original Illustration for The Shadow (Street & Smith, 1930s). Considered by many to be the finest artist ever to work on the Shadow, Tom Lovell began working for pulps in the early 1930s, beginning a career that would include work for National Geographic, Time-Life, and many other important publishers. The illustration offered here, from an unidentified issue of The Shadow, is boldly rendered in pen and ink, with some artistic use of whiteout. Written in pencil in the lower left corner is the notation, "Let This Side Come: p-143, Double sp-, "The bucket began to spring away from the mooring mast, increasing its speed as it went." On the opposite side, the measurement "4 15/16" has been noted. The piece has been nicely framed and matted to an overall size of approximately 23.25" x 18", with an image area of approximately 17.75" x 12.5". Very rare and desirable, Shadow illustrations from this popular artist are quite hard to come by, so don't let this one pass you by.
