For the first time in Heflin's life he thought he might be worth something after all.  Active in three sports, Tom received a football scholarship from  the Northeast University of Louisiana, Monroe.  After finding out the University did not have a fine-arts major, Heflin went North again to the Art Institute of Chicago. In the spring of 1970 Heflin launched his career as a fine artist.  It was a risky venture with a wife and five children, but with tenacity and a little luck Tom has continued to work as a full time artist for over 35 years.  Heflin's penchant is to challenge himself with different mediums and styles. Never being satisfied with what he calls "recipe" painting, he moves from detailed Realism to Surrealism to total Abstraction.**Retrieved from: http://www.askart.com/askart/h/tom_pat_heflin/tom_pat_heflin.aspx
