To Catch a Thief (Paramount, 1955). Half Sheet (22" X 28") Style B. With television invading homes in the 1950s, Hollywood had to draw audiences by offering the spectacle that a black-and-white 17" screen could not. Alfred Hitchcock's mystery-romance was one of the first films shot in VistaVision, a widescreen process that emphasizes the pastel panorama of the French Riviera. The story (a cat burglar comes under suspicion when a new string of jewel thefts occur) serves as a light pretext for car chases and rooftop thrills, and, of course, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly wearing bathing suits and trading quips -- against blue skies and bluer water. Hitchcock's opening shot of a travel-agency poster for Nice reveals the filmmaker's intentions, one aligned with much of Hollywood at the time: get theater-goers out of their homes by allowing them to escape to somewhere exotic, with the rich and famous as travel companions. This Style B half sheet has a few tears in the edges, four pinholes in the bottom border and light staining in the upper-left corner. Once folded but now rolled, it is more rare than the Style A, and it features even more of the Riviera's beautiful skyline, framed by the stars' beautiful faces. Very Fine.
