Postmaster general, secretary of war, and secretary of state under Washington (1745–1829). ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, March 20, 1800. Letter to George Simpson, in part: "The Bearer, Brittain White, has been two years a clerk in my office. Unwilling to accompany it to the City of Washington he has desired me to give him a certificate of his conduct, which may be of use in his intended application for a place in the Bank of the United States. Mr. White has shewn himself diligent and faithful, writes a good hand expeditiously, and if correct in figures (which from having served an apprenticeship with a merchant I should suppose) will be very competent to a clerkship in the bank. In my office his only duty has been that of a copying clerk. You will also find him a quiet, modest young man. I believe him perfectly trust-worthy." In fine condition.

After Congress adjourned its last meeting in Philadelphia on May 15th, Adams told his cabinet to make sure Congress and all federal offices were up and running smoothly in their new headquarters—in Washington, D.C.—by June 15, 1800. Philadelphia officially ceased to serve as the nation’s capital as of June 11, 1800.
