Artist Statement: I am inspired by nature unique structures & textures. There is pattern in natural objects, and patterns in the meaning science draws from them. As an artist, I call my work “Biomimetic Expression,” creating works from my memory of the natural object.
Elements of this work:
Structure of the shellfish (macro)
Laminating pattern to appear because a shellfish grows up (micro)
Cell, hypha, protein sequence micro pattern
You might imagine an organism that sealed with a shell in the ancient times (living fossil)

Biography:
Satoshi Fujinuma holds an environmental chemistry degree. He was working as a ceramics engineer when he saw woodturning by chance while traveling in New Zealand in 1993. By 1996 he had started to teach himself to create functional craft work. In 1998, he had work selected for the 1998 AAW Symposium in Akron. There he saw the lathe used to create sculptural objects, and started to create work that expressed his interest in, and understanding of, the natural world.
