Model 1840 U.S. Heavy Cavalry Sword, Imported by Tiffany & Co. A German sword for the U.S. Civil War market, with 36'' blade with double fuller, narrow and wide, marked at the ricasso area ''PDL'' in an oval, and ''Tiffany & Co. New York'', on the other side. Grooved wood grip with thin leather covering. Steel three-branch guard and pommel is unmarked. Scabbard is steel with two large hanging rings. OAL is 43''. Condition is fair with blade having moderate rust pitting overall and being lightly cleaned. The guard shows numerous dents and dings, the pommel has pitting and some evidence of the tang being re-peened. Handle is tight to the blade. Grip has two large lengthwise cracks and has losses to the leather covering. Wire grip wrapping is missing. Scabbard has remnants of an old painted finish that has been partially removed.
