Tiffany Transatlantic Cable Section. The introduction of the electric telegraph shrunk distances across continents to almost nothing. It took the same amount of time to send a message across the country as it did to cross the street. The first electric telegraph line was constructed in 1844 between Washington and Baltimore, and over time these lines linked nearly all of the country together. Once cables reached the Eastern-most part of the United States and the Western-most parts of Europe, there was only a gap of 2000 miles which seperated linking the continents together! This was a challenge which scientists hoped to answer quickly. Fredrick Gisborne was the mastermind behind laying the transatlantic cable. After many failed attempts there was finally success in the year of 1866. And so the continents were linked! This was a huge step for technology and for communication. This lot features an actual piece of the transatlantic cable. It is endorsed by Tiffany & Co. of New York as being authentic. In 1858 when a portion of the cable failed, one of the promoters of the transatlantic cable project sold a quantity of the unused cable to Tiffany & Co., to be cut into small pieces and sold as souvenirs. This is a part of that sale. A small brass ring has been placed around the cable with Tiffany's endorsement stamped on it. The cable is 12" long and 3/4" thick. It has only slight rusting on the outer portions of the cable, otherwise it is in excellent shape for a display piece. This is an amazing piece of history. It is safe to say that telegraphs are largely forgotten, however, they hold an important place in the timeline of worldwide telecommunications. A fantastic and interesting lot for a wide variety of hobbyists!
