Deities within a central rectangle -- there is great strength in
this very simple but powerful carving. The central figures depict
the Buddha, Sakyamuni with disciples by his side -- Sariputra
(the elder and leading disciple) and Maudgalyayana (foremost in
enlightened powers).

At some point between 78-144 A.D., the poet Asvaghosha wrote
the Sariputra-Prakarana, which is one of the oldest Sanskrit
dramas known to exist (showing that dramatic art attained full
development by the 2nd century). Portions of the manuscript
that have survived are the ninth and the last chapter, which
presents a conversational scene between Sariputra and
Maudgalyayana, the two chief disciples sculpted here.

Besides these three primary characters, his disciple Kaundinya
was mentioned specifically, and likely in the remaining, lost
portions of the manuscript, there was mention of the Buddha's
other great Disciples and Bodhisattvas. With that in mind, and
given the composition of this carving, set in a rectangular stage,
it is logical to wonder if this image was in fact inspired by the
ancient drama, Sariputra-Prakarana.

The Tibetan Museum Society, a 501(c)(4) non-profit association,
is a recently formed international civic league of concerned
citizens who wish to advocate museum exhibition of Asian art
from ancient Mongolia and the greater Himalayan
region.
