Exquisite detail on this very old travel alter honoring Guan Yin.
Guan Yin is one of the most universally beloved deities in the
Buddhist tradition. Also known as Kuan Yin or Quan Yin in
China, Tara and Avalokitesvara in Tibet, Quan'Am (Vietnam),
Kannon (Japan), and Kanin (Bali). She is the embodiment of
compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of
Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Quan Yin enjoys a
strong resonance with the Christian Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
This alter was discovered in Dunhuang, China, a rural city at the
remote western end of the Great Wall. Since ancient times,
Dunhuang has been the western hub of commerce and culture
along the "Silk Road" between India, Tibet and China. It comes in
3 distinct and interlocking pieces and was probably used by
traveling monks for worship. The details on the base, throne,
robes and jewels is impressive and unique. The Dalai Lama, the
spiritual leader of Tibet, is considered to be the current
incarnation of Tara.
