New York newspaper publisher (1797–1882) and ardent Lincoln supporter, who played an instrumental role in securing the presidential nominations of Harrison, Clay, Taylor, Scott, Fremont, and Lincoln, between 1840 and 1860. LS, three pages, lightly-lined on two sheets, 7.75 x 9.5, August 1, 1881. Letter to a gentleman, regarding Ohio. In part: “Ohio succeeds Virginia as the Mother of Presidents. It has been my privilege…to have known and been honored with the friendship of Presidents Harrison, Hayes, and Garfield—whose life, as the world grieves to know is suspended by a thread…Early in the Rebellion after Generals Lee, Johnson, and others had gone into the secession Army we were greatly in need of capable and experienced officers…Col. Sherman soon rose to the rank of Major General and after rendering gallant service at Vicksburg, Atlanta, etc…he organized a formidable Army whose achievements in marching hundreds of miles through Rebel States reaching Richmond in season to divide with General Grant the glory of the capture. It was a bright day for the Union when Gen. Sherman assumed that command. There is nothing in the history of Napoleon’s campaign showing higher military qualities than the triumphal march of Gen. Sherman.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (two vertical folds passing through single letters of the signature), scattered soiling, and mounting remnants to left border.
