The artist Edward Hayes was born in Tipperary in 1797 and began his artistic career as a miniature painter in Clonmel, Waterford and Kilkenny. A talented artist, he later moved to Dublin expanding his business to include portraits in watercolour and pencil, such as these examples. He was a regularly exhibited his paintings in the Royal Hibernian Academy which included a portrait of Daniel O'Connell in 1833. He was elected a member of the RHA in 1861. He died three years later and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin along with his son Michael Angelo Hayes.
