Lot of 3 General Land Office patents for Stephenson County, Illinois issued 1843-45. All are signed by secretaries for the president (two for John Tyler, one for James Polk). All are 10 x 16" Stephenson County, Illinois, organized in 1837, spent the 1840s transforming from raw prairie into a settled farming region, with Freeport emerging as the county seat and commercial hub. The decade saw rapid population growth, especially from German immigrants, and the spread of farms, mills, schools, and churches that anchored permanent communities. Agriculture-particularly wheat and livestock-dominated the economy, with roads linking the county to Galena, while railroads would not arrive until the following decade.
