Three Sam Houston Cartes de Visite.
Three Sam Houston Cartes de Visite. Sam Houston was a Congressman from Tennessee. He later, of course, moved to Texas and became president of the Republic after defeating Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. When Texas joined the Union, he was a Senator for three terms, then Governor. At the start of the Civil War, Houston refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederate States of America and was discharged as governor. He died two years later in Huntsville, Texas. Images of Houston are almost as scarce as his signature. Here we offer three images, two of which are different takes on the same pose. Houston sits in a chair, holding his walking stick, wearing a thick coat and shawl. His piercing eyes and stern countenance are easily recognizable. The third image is of an older Houston standing near a table. The standing image bears an imprint that simply reads "CA" on the verso. It is in very fine condition; light overall toning; pencil notations on verso; double lined gilt border; square corners.

The first seated image, the closer face shot, bears the C.D. Fredericks imprint on the verso and is in very fine condition; moderate soiling on both sides; ink notations on recto; proprietary stamp on verso; double lined gilt border; square corners.

The third image has had the backing paper ripped away so one cannot know if there was an imprint on the verso; corners moderately worn; upper right corner bent and chipped; soiled thumb print on upper edge; pencil notation on recto; no border; square corners.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
