on regular and cabinet-sized mounts and from the The Great North-West series, with Morrow's Yankton, Dakota Territory credit; cabinet-sized cards with printed titles listed on verso include 334 Cake of Ice 14 feet high, 40 inches thick, tops of houses on shore in distance; 330 Steamer Helena after the heavy rise April 5th. Elevator and depot in distance; and manuscript title below regular-size card 92 Ice Gorge. Missouri River 1872.

An April 16, 1881 New York Times article headlines this event The Great Western Flood: Sufferings and Losses in the Missouri Valley. An ice gorge creating an enormous sea - a trip through the overflowed country - nearly 1,500 people dependent upon charity. A quickly rising Vermillion river flooded the town of Vermillion within hours, stranding hundreds of people. After four days, the ice in the river began to move, destroying railroads, bridges, and telegraphs, along with 132 buildings.
