All three are John Conly & Co., Bankers, (La Porte) checks issued with the dateline of "Port Wine." Two are issued to William H. Knight. Knight joined H.H. Bancroft & Co. in 1860 to edit a series of handbook guides to the Pacific States, the first of which appeared in 1862. At the time of this check, he is listed as a clerk with the company. His work was the crucial start to forming the Bancroft Library'. The other check is issued to the Dodge Bros. & Co., who are listed in the 1867 SF directory as dealers in "wholesale California and Eastern provisions." Cut cancels. Port Wine is now a ghost town (located near La Porte). [Ref: http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/Exhibits/bancroft/early/early.html] (Prag Collection)
