<B>Three Nineteenth-Century Classics in One Volume: David Lyndsay's <I>Dramas of the Ancient World</B></I></B></I><B>, Mrs. Henry Rolls' <I>Legends of the North, or, The Feudal Christmas; A Poem</B></I></B></I><B>, and Thomas Moore's <I>The Loves of the Angels</B></I></B></I><B> Signed by Theodore Hook.</B></I> Published in 1822, 1825, and 1823 respectively, bound together at a later date in half-leather binding with marbled boards, with gilt lettering and decoration on the banded leather spine, 698 total pages, 8vo (5.5" x 8.625).<BR><BR><B>David Lyndsay: <I>Dramas of the Ancient World</B></I></B></I> (Edinburgh: Printed for William Blackwood: and T. Cadell, Strand, London, 1822), 278 pages with one-page advertisement following the title page, "<I>Lott 166 Hooksvale</B></I>" written in ink along the top edge of the title page.<BR><BR><B>Mrs. Henry Rolls: <I>Legends of the North, or, The Feudal Christmas; A Poem</B></I></B></I> (London: Printed for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, 1825), 272 pages plus preface and dedication.<BR><BR><B>Thomas Moore's <I>The Loves of the Angels</B></I></B></I> (London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823), 148 pages, signed "<I>Theodore Hook January 8, 1823</B></I>" on the half-title of <I>The Loves of the Angels</B></I>.<BR><BR>David Lyndsay and Walter Sholto Douglas were two pseudonyms used by Mary Diana Dods, a close friend of Mary Shelley's. With Mary Shelley's help, Dods successfully masqueraded for years as a man with a wife and child.<BR><BR>Theodore Hook, the son of James Hook, the musical composer, was born in London in 1788. Hook edited the <I>John Bull</B></I> newspaper for 21 years. He also wrote several novels including <I>Maxwell</B></I> (1830), <I>The Parson's Daughter</B></I> (1832), <I>Love and Pride</B></I> (1832), <I>Gilbert Gurney</B></I> (1836), <I>Gurney Married</B></I> (1838) and <I>Births, Marriages and Deaths</B></I> (1839). His story entitled "The Old Gentleman" appears in an 1829 edition of <I>The Keepsake</B></I> alongside works by Percy and Mary Shelley, which is part of another lot in this auction.<BR><BR>This volume is in very good condition, with some rubbing to the leather at the edges, hinges, and corners. Slight spine wear. Previous owner's handwritten pencil notes on front pastedown, front free endpaper, and rear pastedown.
