1) Established in 1937, the German National Prize for Arts and Science was a substitute award issued to any German who was named a winner of the Nobel Prize; Hitler had banned Germans from receiving awards from the Nobel Committee after Carl von Ossietzky won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935, chiefly for his role in revealing Germany's violations of the Versailles Treaty. The recipients, of which there were only nine, received a 100,000 Reichmark reward, a diamond-studded pendant and a sash such as the one in this lot. The ribbon is red with white stripes, 4 inches wide and approximately 78 inches long with the ends joined with a badge, a red embroidered eagle with black swastika on a white field with a golden thread embroidered border. No makers marks are visible. 2) Golden Hitler Youth Badge, 1 1/2 inches wide and 7/8 inch tall with a RZM logo and "BM 1/122" (J. Deutschbein, Euskirchen) on the back. 3) Black cardboard box, suitable for a medal or other award with silver "SS" runes on the lid. No makers marks are visible.
