Three Letters Concerning the “James Cannon
<B>Three Autograph Letters Concerning the “James Cannon” and Projectiles</B></I>. A group of three letters dating from 1859 through 1865 dealing with Charles T. James of the Rhode Island militia, who developed a projectile that could be used in any cannon specifically rifled for it (15 lands and groves). Included is a one page letter from a Captain William Maynadier, 4.5” x 7”, Washington, April 18, 1859, in which he writes in part: “<I>The Colonel’s letter to the Sec. of War, asking authority to order a 12 pd gun and 100 projectiles from you for trial with other rifled cannons, has just come back ‘approved’</B></I>.” A letter from A. H. Fiske, one page, 5” x 8”, Shamokin (PA), dated August 26, 1862, reads, in part: “<I>Having heard nothing for some time in regards the progress of the “James Rifle Cannon”, I feel anxious to know how it has performed and whether it is being adopted largely.</B></I>” The last letter, from George H. Penfield, two pages, 5” x 8”, Washington, March 18, 1865, in which he writes, in part: “<I>I learned from Gen. Hunt, Chief of Artillery of the Army of the Potomac that you made the “James Projectiles” …of so little size that they got mixed…</B></I>”. All letters have the usual fold creases, a bit of toning, else in fine condition. <I>Ex. Henry E.
