Three J.R.R. Tolkien First Editions
Three J.R.R. Tolkien First Editions. Tolkien remains one of the most beloved authors of this or any time. Millions of readers of all ages continue to marvel at and revel in Tolkien's fiction. Some people have even attempted to live in Tolkien's world, founding colonies devoted to a Middle Earth modus vivendi. Offered here are three Tolkien first editions. The Silmarillion. (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1977), first edition, 365 pages, blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 8vo (5.75" x 9"), dust jacket. 23" x 15" folded color map pasted to rear flyleaf. Edited by Tolkien's son, Christopher. This book is an important entry into Tolkien's legendarium of connected tales, languages and histories about a world called Arda, of which Middle Earth is one of three continents. This copy is fine, with one very minor wrinkle to the head of the jacket spine. Map at rear is perfect, binding is tight, and text is bright.
Tree and Leaf. (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1964), second impression, 92 pages, green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 12mo (5" x 7.5"), dust jacket. Contains the nonfiction essay "On Fairy-stories" and the short fantasy "Leaf by Niggle." Book is near mint, with only minor edge wear to the jacket and previous seller's inventory number in light pencil on front free endpaper. A very attractive copy of this scarce title.
The Father Christmas Letters. (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1976), first edition, unpaginated, illustrated, laminated paper boards, 4to (8.75" x 11"), no dust jacket (as issued). Edited by Baillie Tolkien, previous secretary to J.R.R. Tolkien and second wife to Tolkien's son, Christopher. A collection of annual Christmas letters, written and illustrated by Tolkien for his children, during the years 1925-1939. This copy is very good, with the spine slightly cocked at the tail. Otherwise beautiful. Wonderful lot of eclectic titles from "the father of modern fantasy literature."
