The Americana, letters, and ephemera listed in this auction come directly from the estate of the nephew of the late Paul C. Smith (1908-1976). They have never before been offered to the public.

Three Earl Warren Autograph Letters Signed "Earl Warren" as Governor of California, 1946-1952

All letters addressed to Mr. Paul C. Smith, as either Chief Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

1.) One page, 11" x 8 1/2"; May 10, 1946.

2.) One page, 10 1/2" x 7 1/4"; July 1, 1946. Also included is a carbon copy reply by Smith's secretary.

Warren writes, in part:

"I don't believe I have ever congratulated you on receiving the Silver Star, awarded for gallantry on Guam... A mutual friend has told me that you also hold two Bronze Stars. This is an enviable record."

3.) One page, 10 1/4" x 7 1/4"; February 6, 1952.
