Three-Dollar Gold 1865 NGC MS65

Three-Dollar Gold 1865 NGC graded Mint State 65. Sharply struck. Fields are slightly reflective and nearly flawless. A glimmer of golden toning clings to the obverse lettering and portrait, providing a distinctive appearance. It is a truly remarkable example of a date coveted for its tiny business strike mintage of just 1,140 pieces.

This example stands out as one of the absolute finest known. As a date, its great rarity applies not only to Gem specimens, but to all Mint State grades, and the appearance of this breathtaking example is truly an event for specialists in the series. Combined, NGC and PCGS have graded only a few of each at the Mint State 60 and above classifications. As a "65," NGC has graded two, while PCGS has assigned this number to just one. Each service has graded two examples higher by a single point and none beyond that. Only in the last 40 year, or so, have the few Mint State examples come to light. At one time they were thought to be non-existent.

The offered example was struck using the original dies. All were coined in the first half of the year. Originals can be identified by a rather low, level date placement, as opposed to two reported Proof restrikes on which the date slants upward to the right. Restrikes are believed to have been coined in 1872, or later, at the request of Mint Director Henry Linderman, using an 1872 obverse die.
