Lot of 3 different signed by James G. Fair. Fair was one the four "Bonanza Kings", mining millionaires on the Comstock. He also served as a US senator for Nevada. 1) 1874 Bacon Mill to Richards & McKinty, RN-D. The Bacon Mill was located in Silver City at the intersection of Gold Canyon and American Ravine. It was built in 1862. In 1865, it was processing ore from the Bacon Mine in Gold Hill. By 1868, it was controlled by William Sharon and the Bank of California. In 1869, Fair and Mackay bought it to process Hale & Norcross mine ore. In 1871, it was reported to have 20 stamps and a 40 ton daily capacity. [Ansari]. 2) 1875 Gould & Curry to GB Joy, RN-D. The Gould & Curry is one of the most famous mines on the Comstock Lode. Located between the Savage and Best & Belcher mines, it was staked in 1859 after being located by Alva Gould and Abraham Curry. They sold out early and Curry went on to be a central figure in Carson City (he was the first superintendent of the Carson City Mint and the first warden of Nevada State Prison). When the company was incorporated in 1860, George Hearst was one of the incorporators and William C. Ralston was treasurer. The mine was a large producer in the early 1860s and the company erected an incredibly expensive mill in Sevenmile Canyon in 1863. Between 1860-81, production was 314,000 tons yielding over $15 million. 3) 1878 Pacific Mill & Mining Co. to Omega Mill Pay Roll, RN-D. Nice trio in very good condition. The Pacific Mill & Mining Company was established by the "Bonanza Firm" (Mackay, Fair, Flood, and O'Brien) in the 1870s. The Bonanza Firm challenged the broad control Ralston and Sharon exercised over the Comstock Mines, backed by the Bank of California, by joining their finances in various stock operations and transactions, leading to the formation of a new group of mining corporations. They purchased all the major mine suppliers, and in 1877 the group established an "independent" mill, the Pacific Mill and Mining Company, which was wholly owned by the "Bonanza Firm" and incorporated under the Laws of California. The company owned a number of other mills in the Comstock area including the Bacon Mill, Brunswick Mill, California Mill, California Pan Mill, Consolidated Mill, Mariposa Mill, Morgan Mill, Occidental Mill, Omega Mill, Rhode Island Mill, Trench Mill, and the Woodworth Mill/Ditch.
