1. December 4, 1862, Camp Waller Station No. 5, written in brown ink on embossed, fine period paper measuring 7” x 4.5”, 4 pages. The letter is unsigned, and has minor stains and one small edge split, but is very legible. This touching letter reads in part:

“Dear Wife, I seat my self this morning again to give you a full description of our camp and the country around it… across the ravine from the west the Louisville & Nashville R. Road runs and over this place there is a trestle work 87 ft. high two hundred yards long and a very temporary concern for persons to risk their lives in crossing on as heavy trains as I have seen cross on it... This is one of the most desolate and God forsaken part of Creation that I ever saw although it is on the sacred soil of Kentucky…”.

2. May 9, 1863, 4 pages, lined period paper, measuring 8” x 5”, no location, and written to a family member in Massachusetts; in part:

“My dear Susan—I have just rec’d your letter… it seems that our dodging round lately puzzles you… I don’t understand any better than you why the 2d regt. is kept at home… I wish I could be one of the number to go home, but I shall have to content myself till such time as the powers that rule will consent. I hear that… Gen Hooker has given the rebels fitts in Va—hope it is true… Ed G Neall.

3. May 9, 1864, Signal Camp of Instruction, Georgetown, D.C., doublesided sheet, measuring 8” x 5”, written to a family member in Boston, asking for clothes; it reads in part:

“Dear Bro. I received your letter of the sixth inst…. Please tell me how much he charges, and pay him out of my bounty, when you get it… We received twenty five dollars of our U.S. Bounty last week… John H. Nichols”. (3 letters)
