Before the advent of battery-powered electrical mine lamps, underground miners wore a small lamp on their helmet that burned acetylene gas generated by dripping water onto calcium carbide (CaC2). The burning gas produced a bright white flame. Mines purchased carbide in bulk in metal barrels like those in this lot.
