And all cow men know our "stock." Deel & Barry Proprietors. No date, but stationary printed for 190___. This also is accounting information, with Mexican and American accounts separate; includes customs payments and costs of moving stock from one side to the other. Third with heading of W.J. Marsh, Breeder of Pure Short Horn Cattle, Stock Ranch, Carson Valley, near and Sheridan, Douglas Co., Nev. with first two crossed out and Dayton written above. One page letter dated 26 Sept. 1885 deals with monetary issues.

Empire Ranch was recently the focus of an exhibit designed by the University of Arizona Libraries. UAL holds most of the business archives of Empire. The initial 160-acre ranch (Fish) purchased in 1876 by Englishmen Walter Vail and Herbert Hislop grew to become one of the largest (about a million acres) in Southern Arizona, with expansions into California, Oklahoma and Kansas. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. (digitalcommons.library.arizona.edu/x/exhibits/empire)

The other two operations are a bit less easily located. The Lyon County (Nev.) Times of 22 Jan. 1887 did report that Marsh sold a carload of shorthorn cattle and purchased a pair of large horses. Oh, for the news of simpler times!!
