Abraham Lincoln: Three Early Restrikes of an 1860 Campaign Medal. This design is listed by Sullivan as "AL 1860-7B." He notes that this variety was unknown to Satterlee when he did his comprehensive cataloging in 1862. Accordingly, Sullivan speculates that these were struck in various metals to satisfy collector demand. It is interesting that he would single out this particular variety for such commentary, as many of the mid-nineteenth century political medal varieties seemed to have been aimed at that market. Perhaps this one is singled out because it was not necessarily done in the campaign year. The present examples are in brass and white metal, as well as in aluminum, a version which Sullivan suggests more likely dates from the 1890s. All three are in choice condition.
