Thraco-Macedonian Tribes. The Bisalti, c. 475-465 BC. A
Thraco-Macedonian Tribes. The Bisalti, c. 475-465 BC. AR Oktadrachm (28.4 g). Youth (Ares or Rhesus?) holding two spears, standing right on far side of bridled horse right; around, ethnic in left to right order. Reverse: Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. BAR 343 (1987), plate I, 2. We note a thin flan crack at 6 o'clock, possibly expertly repaired. Choice Very Fine.

On this rare and impressive coin type the earliest inscriptions are retrograde with the first letter more of a beta. This specimen falls into the middle group, possessing a later legend. No symbols are in the field, however, and the spears are held horizontally, rather than vertically as on the latest sub-type.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
