Homer mentions the excellent wine of this ancient city, of which Apollo and Dionysos were favorite gods. In the Odyssey, it is Maron, a son of Dionysos, who gives Odysseus the wine with which he would later intoxicate Polyphemos. Maroneia was named from this son of Dionysos, and she consistently used Dionysos, grape themes and horses on her coinage.From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
