ALS signed “T. N.,” one page both sides, 6 x 7, August 18, 1972. Letter to author James Herlihy, in part: "Sorry to have missed you on July 5. I didn't return here from Martha's Vineyard until July 15. I think Alec Wilder told me he told you of my pleasure in your last book (and my sister's pleasure, too.) Admirable writing about that girl…with my partly impaired vision I…cut down on reading and writing—but I feel sure that no other writer has made that milieu more accurately. 'Baker's Lane' is the last address I have for you but I'll bet the P. O. staff knows how to find you. I'm hard at work—and engrossed in it. You may remember my (and G. Stein's) theory that what one writes should come to me as a surprise. I'm very old now, but I don't feel that way. Remember to write every day—it's no guarantee of inspiration, but inspiration likes to be invoked. I hope you've outgrown smoking four-leafed-clovers and other roadside plants. I've just been reading how Nietzsche smoked no tobacco, and drank no coffee." In very good to fine condition, with moderate overall creasing.
