American author (1874–1965) best known for his popular children’s stories featuring a colorful cast of animal characters. Signed book: The Adventures of Old Man Coyote. First edition, first printing. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1916. Hardcover, 4.75 x 7, 120 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To John X. Jay, Peter Rabbit says: Let not your losses bring dismay; Tomorrow is another day. E’en to a Booby it is plain, What you have lost you yet may gain. Let worry be the winner’s share, To crease his brow with…care. He knows full well that trouble brews, For he has that much more to lose. Thornton W. Burgess, March 15, 1924, Won by John X Jay.” Below his signature, Burgess adds several rabbit tracks, and “Peter’s mark.” In very good condition, with partial separations to hinges, uniform mild toning to signed page, and some light toning and fraying to covers and moderately-sunned spine. Unique and wonderful!
