<B>Thorne Mining and Refining Co., Arizona.</B></I> These enigmatic pieces appear in auction from time to time. Estimates of the number known have ranged from 20 to as many as 80 ingots. The four most likely suspects for the origin of these ingots are: 1) Dan Thorne from Prescott, Arizona, 1890s to 1905; 2) Thorne Copper Mining and Reduction Co., Hawthorne, Nevada, out of business by 1918; 3) Thorne, Alaska, active in 1927; and 4) Isaac N. Thorne, president of the Pacific Metallurgical Works in San Francisco in 1879. These ingots are made from refined silver, sold directly by the company, and not the result of a specific mining operation. This piece follows the standard layout with 4 DOLS 47 CTS / 3.47 OZS TROY/GOLD .0000/SILVER.9998 FINE/SERIAL NO. 268.
