American politician and governor of Rhode Island (1805–1854), who is best known for leading the Dorr Rebellion, an attempt by middle-class residents to force broader democracy in the state, where a small rural elite was in control of government. Rare ink signature, "Thos. W. Dorr—Providence,” on an off-white 6.25 x .5 slip dated in another hand, June 15, 1843. The signature has been affixed to an 8.5 x 11 sheet bearing an affixed engraving of Dorr. In fine condition, with light toning.
