Thomas Tyrer Richmond, Virginia Percussion Dueling Pistol
Marked "THOS TYRER" on the lock, with floral scroll engraving on the lock, hammer and barrel extension, and faint floral engraving and a silver inlaid band on the breech plug. There is both a Thomas Tyrer, Sr. and Jr. listed as gunsmiths in Richmond, Virginia circa 1850 to as late as 1804 when Jr. died. (reference page 311 of American Gunsmiths by Frank M. Sellers. Damascus barrel marked "THO TYRER RICHMOND" on the top flat, small brass bead front and fix iron rear sights, sliding hammer safety on the mounted on the lock, wooden ramrod with brass ends, solid under barrel rib and mounted with a checkered half-stock with silver forend cap, thumb oval and wedge escutcheons and iron buttcap with sun burst engraved design.

Condition: Very good. The barrel shows half of the faded tiger strip Damascus pattern visible with some minor pitting. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wedge escutcheons have an aged patina while the forend cap remains relatively bright. The stock has been varnished and the checkering recut, and it remains very good with a few minor dents and dings. The barrel marking is beginning to fade, otherwise the markings and engraving, unless noted above, are clear. Mechanically excellent.
