Handwritten copy of a letter sent to him by Jefferson Davis, one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, Grand Camp Confederate Veterans letterhead, May 2, 1889. Munford transcribes a letter from Davis for his personal records. In part: “I read the statement of Rosser…I know that Genl. Lee did not anticipate the necessity for claiming Petersburg as soon as he did and had heard of his dissatisfaction with Pickett for the affair at Five Forks but I had no idea that the case was as bad as Rosser presents it…The purpose to reach the Roanoke River was defeated by the success of the enemy on our right flank—and it was hardly an exaggeration when you speak of that fatal punch as the ruin of the Confederacy. It certainly did hasten the catastrophy [sic].” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some slight brushing to ink.
