Thomas Sully Comments On a Portrait of "Uncommon Force and Skill" Which He attributes to Gilbert Stuart. Sully, Thomas. American artist. Autographed Letter Signed. 1 page 8vo, Philadelphia, Oct. 28, 1869, to Thomas Blackburne of that city, commenting on a painting he saw which he thinks is a Stuart original. Sully writes: "The portrait I saw at No. 431 Christian St. I thought an original by [Gilbert] Stuart, and one of uncommon force and skill." Fine, with the original envelope in his hand. An interesting letter to a great portraitist talking about another artist of greatness.
